Quick checks
Is it just you — or is Perplexity down?
Website, API, and Computer are different components. Identify which one failed.
- 01
Open Perplexity Status
Confirm Website vs API vs Computer. A Computer-only incident can feel like “Perplexity down” if that is the feature you were using.
- 02
Retry a simple query
If a short search works but Research / Computer fails, you are in a feature-scoped problem.
- 03
Another browser / network
Extensions that rewrite pages break citation UIs often — test a clean profile.
- 04
API consumers check separately
Builders: API downtime can coexist with a working website (and the reverse).
Who this hits
When a Perplexity outage hurts most
Research is search → sources → answer → follow-ups. Losing a thread means losing the chain of citations — not just one prompt.
Mid-Research / Deep Research
Dozens of searches and a long report. A failed run can erase hours of accumulated work — copy the summary and key URLs before refresh.
Computer tasks
Sandbox / Computer jobs are a separate status component. Save intermediate outputs even if Website looks fine.
Projects
Projects keep conversations, files, and instructions together. A broken Project is more disruptive than one failed query — note the project name and query.
While you wait
What to do if you had an unfinished chat
Perplexity outages are costly mid-Research (dozens of searches + citations) or mid-Computer task. Save the summary and source links before refreshing.
Copy answer + citations
Grab the visible summary and a few citation URLs. A failed Research run can leave an incomplete report even when older chats remain.
Computer tasks are separate
Perplexity Status lists Computer as its own component. Website can look fine while Computer sandbox tasks fail — check the official board.
Park the original query
Keep the question text (and Project name if you use Projects) so you can rerun Research after the Perplexity outage clears.
Back up Perplexity chats you want to find again
Pactify syncs Perplexity conversations to Notion and indexes chat history for local search. When Perplexity is down, you can still find Research threads you already backed up — it does not keep Perplexity itself running.

What is at stake
What usually survives vs what is at risk
Finished threads usually return; incomplete Research is the fragile artifact.
Usually still there later
- Older Perplexity threads that finished
- Saved Collections / Spaces once the site recovers
- API keys and account settings
Easy to lose right now
- Incomplete Research reports
- Citation lists only on screen
- Computer task outputs not exported yet

What you might see
Perplexity feels down — what people usually mean
Search, Research, and Computer can fail separately. Here’s the everyday version.
“Something went wrong, try again later”
Often a temporary glitch. Try a short, simple question first. If that works but Research fails, wait and retry Research later.
Search spins forever / never returns an answer
Copy any partial text on screen before you refresh — a stuck search often loses what you already saw.
Old threads or library won’t open
History can break while a new search still works. Keep your own copies of Research you care about.
Computer / sandbox tasks fail, but search works
Those tools can break on their own. Save any intermediate results, then use regular search until Computer recovers.
FAQ
Perplexity down — FAQ
Why does Perplexity go down sometimes?
Perplexity runs on shared cloud infrastructure. Traffic spikes, model rollouts, and upstream network issues can cause partial or full outages — often on one surface (web chat, API, or a single model) rather than everything everywhere. Short incidents are common and usually not about your account alone.
How long do Perplexity outages usually last?
Many incidents resolve in under an hour; larger events can last several hours. Prefer the official status page over social rumor for live updates.
Will I lose my Perplexity chats if it goes down?
A temporary outage usually does not delete your existing conversation history. What you often lose is the unfinished assistant reply — a generation that never committed cleanly. Copy anything useful on screen before you refresh.
How do I prevent losing important Perplexity conversations?
During an outage: copy key prompts and answers to a note. For ongoing protection: back up chats you care about. Pactify can sync Perplexity conversations to Notion and index chat history for full-text search on this device — so when the host is down, you can still find chats you already backed up (it does not keep Perplexity itself running).
Where is the official Perplexity status page?
Use the official status source linked at the top of this page (https://status.perplexity.com/). Pactify summarizes that source when available.
Perplexity website works but Computer is broken?
Yes. Official status separates Website, API, and Computer. A Computer-only incident can look like “Perplexity down” if that is the feature you were using.
Did my Research result disappear?
A failed Research run can be incomplete or unusable. That is different from your entire conversation history being deleted — still copy citations while they are on screen.
Are Collections deleted during an outage?
Usually no. Protect unfinished Research and Computer output; Collections typically return with the site.
Can Pactify recover Perplexity research I never backed up?
No. Pactify can sync Perplexity chats to Notion, export open threads, and search history already indexed on this device. It cannot recreate live search state from a failed Research run.
