Is Claude down right now?

Quick checks

Is it just you — or is Claude down?

Claude incidents are often model-specific or product-specific. Confirm before rewriting your whole workflow.

  1. 01

    Read status.claude.com components

claude.ai, Claude API, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork are listed separately — one can fail while another answers.

  2. 02

    Try a different model

If Opus errors but Haiku still works (or the reverse), you are likely in a model-scoped incident, not a total Anthropic blackout.

  3. 03

    Swap network / browser

Private window + hotspot rules out extensions and local DNS before you call it a Claude outage.

  4. 04

    Separate Code vs chat

Claude Code / Cowork disconnects can happen while claude.ai chat still loads. Check the matching status line.

Who this hits

When a Claude outage hurts most

Claude downtime is worst deep in a coding session, inside a Project, or mid-Artifact — capacity limits and true outages feel similar from the chair.

Long coding sessions

Users get deep into a conversation, then lose earlier context or hit “unable to respond.” Reconstructing what was already tried is the expensive part — copy the last good output.

Projects with files

A Project holds more than one chat. Losing access mid-thread means losing working context around the whole project — note the project name and question before refresh.

Artifacts / Claude Code

An Artifact is often the “current version” after many iterations. Claude Code disconnects can happen while chat still loads — save the visible Artifact or buffer.

While you wait

What to do if you had an unfinished chat

Claude outages sting when an Artifact was mid-iteration, a Project thread was mid-answer, or Claude Code disconnected mid-task. Protect the draft first.

Copy the last Claude reply / Artifact

Partial Artifacts and long answers are easy to lose on refresh. Grab whatever rendered before the Claude AI error.

Keep Project context

If the chat lived in a Claude Project, note the project name, key files, and the question you were asking so you can restart cleanly after the outage.

Claude Code: retry the session

Anthropic has told users in incidents that disconnected Claude Code / Cowork sessions can often be retried — check status.claude.com for the active notice.

Back up Claude chats you want to find again

Pactify syncs Claude conversations to Notion and indexes chat history for local search. When Claude is down, you can still find chats you already backed up — it does not keep Claude itself running.

While you wait — a simple backup

Back up Claude chats — search your history later

This page tracks whether Claude is down. Pactify backs up Claude conversations to Notion and indexes chat history for local search — Artifacts, Projects, and long code threads you already saved stay findable when claude.ai is down.

Sync chats to Notion

Sync Claude chats to Notion after Artifacts or long coding sessions — a readable backup in your workspace, not only in the Claude tab.

Search chat history on this device

Full-text search across Claude chats indexed on this device. Useful when you need an old answer and Claude is temporarily unreachable — only for chats you already backed up or opened with Pactify.

Export when you need a copy

One-shot export to Markdown / Word (and Notion) for any open Claude chat — handy after a long thread you do not want to lose to copy-paste.

What is at stake

What usually survives vs what is at risk

Claude outages interrupt availability more often than they wipe libraries.

Usually still there later

  • Finished Project conversations
  • Project knowledge files you already uploaded
  • Account settings and prior Artifacts that fully saved

Easy to lose right now

  • Streaming answers that never completed
  • Artifact revisions only visible on screen
  • Claude Code buffer output not yet committed elsewhere

Status honesty

What Claude status covers — and what it doesn’t

status.claude.com is the official Anthropic board. Use it with these caveats.

Model-level incidents are common

A single model can degrade while the rest of Claude looks fine. Read the incident text, not only the green banner.

API vs claude.ai

Builders hitting api.anthropic.com can see different symptoms than browser users on claude.ai.

Prefer the official status page

Pactify summarizes status.claude.com. Social spikes are not a substitute for Anthropic’s own updates.

What you might see

Claude feels down — what people usually mean

Same frustration, different messages. Here’s what each one usually points to — and what to try next.

“Something went wrong” after a long wait

Often Claude itself is struggling. Check the status card above, wait a few minutes, or try again on phone data.

“Claude is unable to respond” / too busy

Claude can be overloaded even when it is not fully “down.” Try again later, or switch to another model if you have one available.

One model fails, another still works

Common. If Opus fails but another model answers, it is usually a temporary model issue — not your account.

Chats or Projects won’t open

The sidebar can break while a new chat still works. Copy any Artifact or reply still on screen before you refresh.

FAQ

Claude down — FAQ

Why does Claude go down sometimes?

Claude runs on shared cloud infrastructure. Traffic spikes, model rollouts, and upstream network issues can cause partial or full outages — often on one surface (web chat, API, or a single model) rather than everything everywhere. Short incidents are common and usually not about your account alone.

How long do Claude outages usually last?

Many incidents resolve in under an hour; larger events can last several hours. Prefer the official status page over social rumor for live updates.

Will I lose my Claude chats if it goes down?

A temporary outage usually does not delete your existing conversation history. What you often lose is the unfinished assistant reply — a generation that never committed cleanly. Copy anything useful on screen before you refresh.

How do I prevent losing important Claude conversations?

During an outage: copy key prompts and answers to a note. For ongoing protection: back up chats you care about. Pactify can sync Claude conversations to Notion and index chat history for full-text search on this device — so when the host is down, you can still find chats you already backed up (it does not keep Claude itself running).

Where is the official Claude status page?

Use the official status source linked at the top of this page (https://status.claude.com/). Pactify summarizes that source when available.

Why does one Claude model fail while another works?

Claude incidents frequently target specific models. status.claude.com often lists affected models explicitly — that is why Claude can look “down” for Opus while Haiku still answers.

Is “unable to respond” the same as Claude down?

Not always. Anthropic capacity messages can appear when demand is high even without a major outage banner. Check status.claude.com, then retry or switch models.

Will a Claude outage delete my Projects?

Unlikely. Availability incidents rarely wipe Project libraries. Protect unfinished Artifacts and replies first.

Can Pactify recover Claude chats I never backed up?

No. Pactify can sync Claude to Notion, export open chats, and search history already indexed on this device. It cannot recover chats never captured, and it cannot answer for Claude while Claude is down.
